New name reflects old values for former monastery site

From the Rapid City Journal

The Catholic Diocese of Rapid City has renamed the former St. Martin Monastery site Terra Sancta and recently began using the property for its Spirituality Initiative, a parish renewal program.

Bishop Blase Cupich said the new name, which means “holy land” in Latin, honors the property’s history as a place of service and prayer while making it clear that the site should “always remain a holy place that calls us to be holy people.”

The first events held at Terra Sancta began this month and will continue through February, as clergy and lay people from clusters of parishes throughout the diocese gather for a weekend program designed to enhance the spiritual lives and vitality of parishes.

The first parishes met Nov. 13-15 at Terra Sancta.

The Rapid City Catholic School District will use part of the old monastery facility, but no specific school plans have been announced, a diocesan spokesman said.
